“Grammaw Helen Mae on Horseback, I” is based on an old photograph of my maternal grandmother, Helen Mae. She and her painting served as inspiration for the short-story, Milepost 9: It’s Gonna Take A Miracle, a piece written towards the end of 2020, a tumultuous year for many. At its core, it is an effort to take a snapshot of the daily happenings of my little circle while also writing about my efforts to get to know my maternal grandmother through one of her life-long friends, Mr. Louis Foster. Shared in five parts, written for posterity, it highlights our varied experiences during the global pandemic.
